Common Problems And Solutions In PVC Granulating Line

PVC granulating line is majorly used to process the granules of PVC. When the machine is in good condition, it works with high productivity, uniform pellets, and high precision. However, the level of productivity reduces when there are hitches.

Some hitches may result in minor problems, and others may lead to a huge loss of revenue. To keep the machine working with high performance, it is essential to fix the hitches quickly.

As a reputable organization, we decide to provide some solutions to common problems that you may face while operating the machine. The information here is to help you make informed decisions.

1. Pellet Chain

The major aim of the PVC granulating line is to produce granules of PVC. However, there are instances where the granules adhere together to form a pellet chain. The chains may occur due to several problems such as:

Cause 1

Too high temperature of processing water

Solution

Reduce the temperature of the water to provide enough quenching effect to the surface of the particles.

Cause 2

The die holes are too close

Solution

Replace the die with another one that has a small number of holes and large spacing.

 2. Hopper Bridge Problem

Hopper bridge forms when there is too much moisture absorption, filler, and cluster in the hopper wall.

Cause 1

The clusters increase the friction between the hopper wall and the mixture.

Solution

Add lubricants such as white oil to reduce the friction that occurs between the hopper wall and the mixture. Reduce the high mixing period and the number of liquid additives.

Cause 2

At the feeding port, bridging problems can occur as a result of the low melting point of some processing supports.  The high temperature at the first and second zones soften materials at the bottom, making it difficult to feed.

Solution

Lower the processing temperature at the first and second zones to appropriate levels.

3. Tailing Problem

Tailing is a term given to a particle that has protruding edges. The edges have a tail-like shape like a broom.

Cause:

Failure to make a perfect cut

Solution

Replace the bed-knife and the hob to produce a sharp cutting edge. You can also re-determine the spacing of the equipment based on the value stated in the producer’s manual.

 4. Powder Problem

The powder is a tiny particle that flies around during the granulating process.

Solution

Adjust the machine process variables. Lowering the temperature when the material enters the cutting blade can solve this problem too.

5. Poor Exhaust

Poor exhaust can occur due to the presence of water vapor in the material. Either additive like flame retardants decomposes the water vapor or the vacuum leaks or is too small. It leads to the presence of vapor that forms hollow material.

Solution

The use of high-temperature water for non-crystalline plastics such as HIPS and ABS can solve the problem. For crystalline plastics, low water temperature is recommended.
